The group poses for a picture in Times Square. From left to right: Cece, Gerry, Ilyris, Ashly, Michellay, Anthony (front), Allen, Crystal, Latisha, and Cynamon.
Khinde show The Kehinde Wiley show at the Studio Museum of Harlem was one of the highlites of the trip. If you have not heard of this artist, he is amazing!

Check him out at his website

The group got to visit the HBO set of Last of the Ninth. David Milch, father of Art Center teacher, Ben Milch, is currently working on the show and took some time to talk with the group.

Below is another picture of the set, which takes place in the 70s.

Friday, August 15, 2008 ~ Garden Party!
We held our Garden Party on Thursday, August 14. Many community members came out to celebrate. We grilled, had a water balloon toss, and played frisbee.

A special thanks goes out to our Summerlinks intern, Allison Ross, for putting this together and acquiring local donations of food.

A good time was had by all!

Khalyn, Jade, and Janae used digital cameras during Open Studio this week.

They had fun experimenting with some different kinds of pictures.

Friday, August 8, 2008 ~ Anthony = Art Teacher
Anthony teaching class
Due to miscommunication, a teacher did not come on Monday. I asked the interns if anyone wanted to jump in and teach a class. No one volunteered so I began setting up a self-portrait class. Anthony came upstairs and said he could take over. Anthony, a participant since 2001 and now 18 years old, taught his first class. There were about 10 students in the class.

He did a great job and we are very proud of him!

Friday, August 1, 2008 ~ Another Trip to NYC

The flights are booked!

Sarah (and AmeriCorps Member, Michelle) will be taking 9 teenagers to New York City from August 16 through August 20. Everyone is very excited for this trip!

They will be staying in a hotel, visiting art museums and the Statue of Liberty, among other things. If you would like to make a donation to the Art Center, to help with the field trip, we would greatly appreciate it! For many of the teenagers, this is their first trip to New York City as well as their first time on a plane. It will be a trip they will remember for the rest of their lives.

Last August, Sarah took 5 teenagers. They saw the Museum of Modern Art, toured the School of Visual Arts and Platinum Studios, visited St. Patrick's Cathedral, and went out to eat. Below are two pictures from last year's trip.
